The new Gold standard has been applied to the 2001 model Gold Wing. It's 6 cylinder soul has now been increased to 1832cc pushing out a claimed 118bhp and 125lbs of torque.
The new engine is lighter than it's 1500cc predecessor by about 2.5 lbs and has computer controlled fuel injection with two 40mm throttle housings. Making for one of the cleanest burning motorcycles ever.
The engine
cooling is provided by two radiators, which are side mounted. When the machine's speed falls below 15mph, fans draw air into the radiators keeping them cool. Power is fed through a 5-speed gearbox with a slow speed electronic reverse gear. Clutch is hydraulic. Shaft drive is routed through a single-sided Pro-arm swinging arm, allowing for easier rear wheel removal. Luggage does not have to be removed to service the rear wheel.
Frame is aluminium and is 25 lbs lighter than it's steel forefather, this does a lot to avoid the earlier Wings' tendency to wallow.
Now standard is the LBS linked braking system with 3 piston calipers gripping the front 296mm discs, with a 316mm unit on the rear. The system uses a PCV proportional control valve to ensure the calipers all work in harmony. When the front brake lever is pulled, the two outer pistons of the right front caliper and the centre piston on the left front caliper combine with the two outer pistons on the rear to curb the speed. When the rear brake pedal is pressed all other pistons are brought into operation. Either brake lever being operated brings the front fork anti-dive mechanism
into operation. ABS anti lock brakes is an option and is computer controlled with self-diagnostics protecting against failure.
Rear suspension uses a single shock absorber with electronic preload, adjustable from the dashboard. The system even has a two-position memory function that can be used when carrying a pillion.
Headlamp height adjustment is also controlled from the dashboard. The rider sits further forward and closer to the adjustable screen than previous models, giving the pillion about 50mm more seat room.
