1992 saw the introduction of the CBR900RR Fireblade sports bike, with razor sharp handling, blitzing the existing standards for sports bikes in its class.
Big bike power with 600-class handling ensured the accolades kept pouring in from the motorcycling press. At 408lbs was 80lbs lighter than its nearest rival and only 2lbs heavier than its stable mate, the CBR600.
With a quarter mile time of 10.59 seconds at 132.74 mph and handling that responded at the speed of thought, there was little at the time to rival this machine, another first for Honda.
The twin spar frame is crafted aluminium and the swing arm, also aluminium, is heavily braced and considered a work of art by many. The front forks are massive 45mm cartridge type with aluminium sliders, adjustable for spring preload and rebound damping. Hondas Pro-Link rear suspension also has compression damping adjustment.
The buying public flocked in their droves to buy the CBR900, not many would be disappointed.
The CBR900RR was also an instant hit on the racetrack and went on for many years taking chequered flags and podium places.
Nine years after its introduction, the CBR900 is still the benchmark, which other manufacturers aim for.
