Bigger brother to the 600cc Hornet the new Honda CB900F has come a long way from the original CB900F of 1979. Now sporting an older version of the 918cc Fireblade engine and producing 110bhp only those with huge neck muscles need apply.
A naked bike with this much power takes a bit of controlling, but this is what a street bike should be, its comfortable, powerful, lightweight with exciting performance and brings a smile to your face.
The engine sports fuel injection for smoother power delivery which peaks out at 9000rpm, a good bit lower than on a Blade, the whole plot only weighs in at 427lbs, making it the lightest bike in its class. 3-D digital mapping ignition and fuel injection provides a smoother accelerating bike as well as being efficient.
The massive frame has a square section backbone, and combined with the large aluminium swingarm, gives and ideal balance of rigidity and flexibility.
The exhaust system is a unique four-into-two-into-one affair with stainless down pipes and centre section with high-rise silencers that might just be to close for comfort of the pillion! Six speed gearbox being nothing out of the ordinary these days, but is smooth shifting for a Honda.
The front forks are 43mm cartridge type giving a generous 4.7 inches of travel with the seven-way adjustable rear shock giving 5 inches of travel to soak up any bumps.
Brakes are huge for a street bike, with twin 296mm front discs with 4-pot calipers, while the 240mm rear has a single piston caliper. The seat is alleged to be comfortable enough for all day two up riding.
All in all quite a nice package for those who prefer not to have a plastic covered bike, with the usual Honda high quality finish this should make a good buy.
Available January 2002 at around £6000.
