Small in comparison to some of the heavy metal of the Harley range of motorcycles, the Sportster models are among the most popular for everyday motorcycling. A down to earth, uncluttered motorcycle but still the quintessential Harley Davidson nonetheless.

The 883 is the entry model to this range, and is identical to it's 1200 brother, being an affordable and a fashionable means of becoming part of the ‘Harley’ lifestyle, a bit like joining an elite club of sorts.

The 883 is powered by a 45° V-twin four-stroke engine of, not surprisingly 883cc capacity producing a lowly 55bhp. Horsepower is not what this bike is about, its torque, and plenty of it to keep the beast ahead of the pack at the lights. Open the throttle and the bike urges forward with initially rapid acceleration accompanied by that unique ‘throb’ of a Harley Davidson exhaust note, instantly recognisable, even from a great distance.

There are so many variations in styling and themes with a Harley, that its owner can consider the basic Sportster as a starting point for further customisation or personalisation to his/her own taste, making the motorcycle unique.

Basically, the 883 comes as standard in two models, the ‘Hugger’ with a single seat and the ‘Custom’ with a dual perch. Either coming with chrome spoked wheels or 13 spoke alloys as standard. Transmission is five-speed with a reliable and near maintenance free belt drive.
The chassis is a steel tube cradle frame with telescopic forks at the front and a twin shock set-up at the rear. Weighing in at 235kgs. this is no lightweight machine, but it’s low seat height appeals to the shorter folk and also to women riders.
Single disc brakes at both ends have been upgraded for 2002, but still considered weak. The small fuel tank on the 883 holds 12.5 litres and is good for around 160 miles.
